The Partido Komunista ng Pilipinas (PKP-1930, the Philippine Communist Party) strongly condemns the attempted coup d’etat in Ecuador on September 30 and October 1, during which mercenary-minded police forces seized barracks in 3 cities, and small military contingents closed some airports. The coupsters besieged President Rafael Correa as he sought to defuse tensions at the main police barracks in the capital city of Quito .

Thanks to the loyalty to democratic principles of the elite police and military forces of Ecuador , President Correa was protected and rescued from the coupsters who wanted to assassinate him. The quick mobilization of the Ecuadorian masses, which came out to the streets to demonstrate support for President Correa, was also a major factor in foiling the coup attempt.

The PKP-1930 notes that this coup attempt has striking parallels with last year’s coup d’etat against President Jose Manuel Zelaya of Honduras, and even with earlier coup attempts against President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela and President Evo Morales of Bolivia. All of them are of progressive orientation, and were popularly elected by their peoples. They have turned their backs on US dictates, and have brought their countries into truly fraternal alliances --- the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), and the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas (ALBA). And all were targeted by the oligarchs and other reactionary forces allied with US imperialism. Notably, US imperialism under the Obama regime aims at increasing the presence of US military bases and fleets in the Latin American and Caribbean region, with the ultimate desire to strangle the revolutionary currents in that region.

Apparently, President Correa was targeted by the coupsters due to his progressive agenda which rid Ecuador of the presence of US military bases and forces, and which increased state control of the country’s oil industry in order to fund a welfare program for the poor. It is this progressive agenda which the coupsters are trying to destabilize and reverse. But it is this same progressive agenda which brought the Ecuadorean people’s support for President Correa, and which continues to strengthen the anti-imperialist movement in Ecuador .

The PKP-1930 expresses its strong solidarity with the anti-imperialist movement in Ecuador , and joins the UNASUR’s call for the strict prosecution and punishment of all those behind this coup attempt.
